Genomicist Martin Sikora stated, “While there is no strong case to say that plague alone caused the population collapse, the total disease load could have been one of several contributing factors.”

Environmental and Social Context

Environmental data from the region indicated a regrowth of forests during this period, typically associated with a decline in human activity. The relationships among the deceased also shifted; prior to the decline, individuals were closely related, indicating a tight-knit community, whereas post-decline relationships were more dispersed, suggesting a sparser population. This pattern points to a society under strain from multiple pressures, followed by a significant demographic turnover.
