Andrew Lloyd Webber, the renowned composer, has publicly shared his journey as a recovering alcoholic, revealing that he sought help 16 months ago after recognizing the detrimental impact of his drinking on his family. In an interview with The Times, he stated, “Sixteen months ago I decided that I needed help and it’s the best thing that ever happened to me.” Lloyd Webber described a period of decline, noting that about 18 months ago, his family was in a “desperate state,” with his wife, Madeleine Gurdon, feeling unable to continue in the face of his struggles.

Lloyd Webber's initial attempts to quit drinking began during the production of "School of Rock" in 2015 and 2016. However, he relapsed, engaging in what he termed “white-knuckling,” where he attempted to abstain without support. He later checked into a clinic, which he found ineffective, prompting him to attend Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings in Switzerland and the UK. He expressed appreciation for the AA community, stating, “What I love about it is, you go into a room and everybody’s equal. I’ve made friends that I wouldn’t have thought possible.”

In discussing his creative process, Lloyd Webber acknowledged that while he wrote many songs sober, he had consumed alcohol during the creation of some hits. He reflected, “Probably not a lot, but I can think of a couple of songs that have been hits where I’d definitely had a glass of wine.” He admitted to the near misses and potential consequences of his drinking, stating, “I thought that I was getting away with it,” and expressed remorse for any negative impact he may have had on others.
