Abdulkhaleq Abdulla, a senior Emirati scholar connected to the UAE leadership, has publicly suggested that the United States military bases in the UAE should be closed, describing them as “a burden and not a strategic asset.” This statement, made on social media and reiterated in an interview with Reuters, reflects a significant shift in the UAE's perception of its defense needs. Abdulla argues that the UAE has demonstrated its capability to defend itself, particularly in light of recent Iranian aggression, and now seeks to focus on acquiring advanced weaponry rather than relying on U.S. military support.
