Sexual Violence as a Tool of Displacement in the West Bank

Recent reports from the West Bank Protection Consortium and the Women’s Centre for Legal Aid and Counselling (WCLAC) have highlighted alarming instances of sexual violence used by Israeli soldiers and settlers against Palestinian communities. These acts are reportedly employed as a means to pressure families into leaving their homes and lands. Over the past three years, 16 cases of conflict-related sexual violence have been documented, although this figure is believed to be significantly underreported due to the stigma surrounding such incidents.

The reports indicate that sexual violence has severe repercussions on the daily lives of Palestinian women, men, and children. Many families have reported that the fear of sexual harassment has led them to make the difficult decision to leave their homes. More than two-thirds of households surveyed identified rising violence against women and children as a critical factor in their displacement. The WCLAC noted that girls have stopped attending school and women have left their jobs to avoid potential assaults, leading to a rise in early marriages as families seek to protect their daughters.

Participants in the studies described harrowing experiences, including forced nudity and invasive searches conducted by Israeli soldiers. One case involved a woman who was subjected to a painful internal search by female soldiers, while another incident saw a young man assaulted and humiliated in front of his community. Kifaya Khraim, advocacy unit manager at WCLAC, emphasized that the reported cases represent only a fraction of the actual incidents, stating, “This is maybe 1% of the cases.”

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) did not respond to inquiries regarding the allegations of sexual abuse by soldiers. Critics argue that the lack of prosecution for such acts sends a troubling message about the normalization of sexual violence in the context of military operations. The recent decision to drop charges against soldiers involved in a high-profile case of rape further exacerbates concerns about accountability.

Human rights activists have condemned the use of sexual violence as a tactic of war, arguing that it constitutes a violation of international law. The reports have drawn attention to the broader implications of these actions, suggesting that they are part of a systematic effort to displace Palestinian communities.
