Einride Partners with Amazon to Electrify Freight Operations

Swedish electric vehicle (EV) trucking company Einride is set to deploy 75 manually operated electric heavy-duty trucks within Amazon's Relay freight network. This initiative marks a significant expansion of Einride's presence in the U.S. market, coinciding with Amazon's ongoing efforts to enhance no-emissions electrification across its logistics operations. The Einride trucks will primarily support Amazon's middle-mile network, which facilitates the movement of goods between fulfillment centers, sort centers, air facilities, and last-mile delivery stations.

The deployment is expected to generate up to three million electric transport miles annually, contributing to Amazon's goal of decarbonizing its transportation network. Einride will also establish charging infrastructure at five locations to support the operation of these trucks. The company's proprietary optimization software, Saga AI, will be utilized to manage the execution of select Amazon loads, including planning for charging.

As of mid-2025, Amazon reported having over 70,000 owned trailers in its fleet and has made significant investments in electric delivery vehicles, including a deal with Rivian for 100,000 electric vans by 2030.

While the current partnership does not include autonomous trucking, 2026 is anticipated to be a pivotal year for Einride and its competitors, such as Waabi, Aurora Innovation, and Kodiak AI, as they expand their autonomous operations in the U.S. Einride has recently received approval from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to operate its autonomous vehicles on public roads in Texas, adding to its existing approvals in Arizona, Colorado, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The company currently operates the first daily commercial autonomous route for GE Appliances in Selmer, Tennessee, and views Texas as a key hub for its American autonomous freight operations.
