Health Crisis in Gaza: Rodent Infestations Amid Displacement

As temperatures rise in Gaza, a significant health crisis is unfolding for the 1.7 million displaced residents living in camps. The aftermath of the war with Hamas, which began in October 2023, has left many without adequate shelter or sanitation. Reports indicate that large rodents, identified as Norway rats, are burrowing into makeshift tents, exacerbating the already dire living conditions. Muhammad al-Raqab, a displaced construction worker, described his struggle: “The rodents have eaten through my tent. My children were bitten while sleeping; one was even bitten on the nose.”

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Action (OCHA) has highlighted that the living conditions in these camps are characterized by severe infestations of vermin and parasites. The lack of sanitation infrastructure has led to the accumulation of waste and debris, creating a breeding ground for pests. Hani al-Flait, head of pediatrics at Al-Aqsa Hospital, noted that his team encounters daily cases of skin infections, including scabies, which are worsened by the unsanitary conditions.

Residents like Ghalia Abu Selmi have shared their experiences of constant battles with pests. She reported that mice had gnawed through clothes she prepared for her daughter's wedding, stating, “Fleas have caused skin allergies not only for children but for adults as well.” The emotional toll of displacement is evident, with families like hers having been relocated 20 times since the onset of the conflict.

Despite a ceasefire that began in October 2025, Israel maintains control over access points into Gaza, leading to frequent rejections of aid deliveries. This has resulted in shortages of essential supplies, including medicine, food, and clothing. According to the health ministry operating under Hamas authority, at least 777 individuals have been killed by Israeli military actions since the ceasefire began, while Israel reports five of its soldiers have also died during this period.
