Recognition of Excellence in Financial Journalism
The South China Morning Post (SCMP) achieved significant recognition at the State Street Institutional Press Awards Asia-Pacific 2025, securing six honors on Tuesday. This year’s awards attracted a record 246 submissions from eight economies, including mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, and France. The awards are designed to celebrate exceptional news reporting in the field of institutional finance across the Asia-Pacific region.
Key Awards and Contributions
Enoch Yiu, a veteran journalist at SCMP, received the prestigious Outstanding Contribution to Institutional Journalism Award. The judging panel commended Yiu for her nearly 30-year dedication to the field, highlighting her exceptional sourcing and ability to navigate complex topics such as regulation and investment services. Additionally, Yiu earned Highly Commended citations in two categories: Journalist of the Year – Regulation for her report on Hong Kong's ambitions to become the leading domicile for major global companies, and Journalist of the Year – Investor Services for her feature on Hong Kong's development as a key offshore yuan hub.
Alfred Lam Ka-sing was awarded the top prize as Journalist of the Year – Regulation for his investigative work on predatory lending practices in Hong Kong. Julie Zhang received a Highly Commended citation in the Journalist of the Year – Capital Markets category for her report on the influx of mainland investors into Hong Kong's equity market, which has prompted numerous Chinese companies to seek listings in the city. Coco Feng also earned a Highly Commended citation in the Journalist of the Year – Data, Technology and Artificial Intelligence category for her investigation into the Nexperia saga, which examined the impact of the US-China tech war on Europe’s chip supply chain.
Insights from the Judging Panel
William Mellor, the lead judge, remarked on the high standard of submissions this year, stating, “This year’s entries raised the bar once again and demonstrated outstanding ability.” Alison Tudor, another judge and former journalist, emphasized the importance of originality in journalism, noting that “in a world where information is abundant, originality is scarce.” She underscored that original reporting, characterized by deep sourcing and thoughtful construction, is increasingly valuable.
Historical Context of the Awards
