Miami Film Festival Celebrates Diverse Cinematic Talent

The 43rd Miami Film Festival concluded on April 19, 2026, with "On the Road (En El Camino)" directed by David Pablos winning the prestigious Marimbas Award, which includes a $10,000 cash prize. This award recognizes the narrative feature that best embodies the potential for cinema's future. The festival also honored "The Old Man and the Parrot," directed by Gabriel de Varona, with the Made in MIA Feature Film Award, which carries a $15,000 prize for films prominently featuring South Florida in their story or production.

Other notable awards included the $10,000 Jordan Ressler First Feature Award, awarded to "Second Victims," directed by Zinnini Elkington, for the best debut narrative feature. The Audience Feature Film Award went to "Comandante Fritz," directed by Pavel Giroud, with "Milly, Queen of Merengue" and "I Swear," directed by Leticia Tonos Paniagua and Kirk Jones, respectively, as runners-up. In the documentary categories, "TheyDream," directed by William D. Caballero, received the Documentary Achievement Award, while "Runa Simi," directed by Augusto Zegarra, won the Audience Documentary Film Award.

In addition to the festival awards, the animated adventure-comedy series "Sun Chaser" is set to launch its pilot at the 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival, scheduled for June 21–27 in Annecy, France. The series, created by Bobby Pontillas and Bernard Badion, features an all-Filipino team and follows the story of Jordan Santos, voiced by Manny Jacinto. The narrative centers on a self-absorbed teen whose summer is disrupted by an ancient icy villain threatening his grandmother's island in the Philippines.

The cast also includes Liza Soberano, Eugene Cordero, and comedian JR De Guzman, alongside Philippine performers Charo Santos, Dingdong Dantes, Zia Dantes, AC Bonifacio, and KD Estrada. "Sun Chaser" previously won the Animation du Monde award at the 2025 festival and is produced by Miguel Del Rosario and Marlyn Montano, with animation handled by Toon City and PlayLab studios in the Philippines.
