Conversely, Germany has firmly committed to phasing out nuclear energy, having shut down its last three reactors in 2023. This decision reflects decades of anti-nuclear sentiment, despite some discussions within the political sphere about future small modular reactors. Belgium has recently reversed its closure plans, extending the lifespan of its reactors, while Spain continues to plan a gradual phase-out of its nuclear capacity.

Global Expansion and Safety Improvements

Russia has aggressively expanded its nuclear capabilities, both domestically and internationally, operating 34 reactors and building 20 more across various regions, including Europe and Africa. The modernization of older Soviet-era reactor designs has incorporated enhanced safety features to address past vulnerabilities. Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, noted that the current momentum in nuclear energy reflects a growing recognition of the need for reliable, low-carbon electricity to meet rising global energy demands.
