Historical Context

On 26 April 1986 reactor 4 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded, releasing roughly 400 times more radioactive material than the Hiroshima-Nagasaki bombs. The Soviet response built a concrete sarcophagus, later replaced by the New Safe Confinement completed in 2016-2018. In February 2025 a Russian drone strike breached the NSC, reviving safety concerns and prompting EU nuclear oversight.
