Karl Standley leads the operation, supported by irrigation specialist Cameron Hutcheon, mower technician David Moulds, veteran goal-post installer Brendan Abbott and staff Liddy Ford. Apprentices James Cruz, Yousef Shah and Josh Wenham complete a team with 57 years Wembley service, including two 20-year anniversaries.

Work starts with dew removal and mowing to 22 mm, followed by blade sharpening tested on paper. Lines are repainted, goalposts erected, and a watering window applies 2 mm of water and 1 mm after warm-up and at half-time. The pitch spans 7,140 sq m of ryegrass cut to 22 mm. Twenty-four radio-controlled sprinklers deliver 2 mm of water pre-kick-off and 1 mm after warm-up. About 5 % of old turf plastic is recycled into benches, key rings, planters and LPs. The fastest installation recorded was 2.5 days.

Standley compares mower blades to scalpels, warning that a cut can invite disease. He describes managing four micro-climates as “dealing with four pitches” and stresses a culture where staff can safely challenge decisions. Hutcheon says an irrigation app would be vulnerable to hacking, justifying the radio-controlled system.
