Historical Context

After Reactor 4 exploded at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant on 26 April 1986, Soviet officials created a 30-km exclusion zone and evacuated tens of thousands. The zone, now managed by Ukraine’s State Agency on Exclusion Zone Management, houses the New Safe Confinement structure. A recent Russian drone strike on that shelter revives the disaster’s lingering security and remediation challenges.
