EU Launches AccelerateEU Package to Counter Iran-War Energy Shock

The United States, Israel and Iran conflict has choked oil and gas flows through the Strait of Hormuz, pushing up energy prices. On Wednesday, 22 April 2026 the European Commission introduced “AccelerateEU”, a package aimed at cushioning immediate price shocks and bolstering long-term energy security.

The plan cuts electricity taxes, speeds wind-turbine, solar-panel and battery roll-out, and sets an EU-wide electrification target before summer. It adds coordinated gas-purchase timing, oil-stock releases, a Fuel Observatory for transport fuels, and state-aid rules allowing up to 50 % subsidies for fuel/fertiliser price hikes.

The Commission describes AccelerateEU as immediate relief that must be temporary, targeted and a step toward energy independence.
