Historical Context

In March 2012 the MNLA and Islamist group Ansar Dine seized Kidal, forcing 504 Malian soldiers to abandon the town. The city changed hands repeatedly, with French-Malian forces retaking it in January 2013 and the junta-Wagner offensive recapturing it in November 2023. The present JNIM-Azawad Liberation Front alliance revives the 2012 rebel-jihadist partnership, threatening Bamako and prompting UN MINUSMA extensions.
