History

Historical Context

In June 1982 Israel launched Operation Peace for Galilee, invading Lebanon and, after a 1985 phased pull-out, set up a “security zone” that held about 180,000 civilians (?6% of the population). Hezbollah emerged in that zone and now its drones and rockets drive the latest Israeli airstrikes and evacuations, repeating the civilian toll that began in 1982 and ended with Israel’s May 2000 withdrawal.
