Historical Context

In June 1939 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth toured North America, first visiting Canada then the United States, where they met President Franklin D. Roosevelt and were presented by Secretary of State Cordell Hull. The trip, arranged with Canadian Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King, sought to strengthen Atlantic support as war loomed, and the king granted royal assent to nine Canadian bills during the tour.
