Historical Context

In 2012 the MNLA seized Kidal, Gao and Timbuktu, allying with AQIM before Islamists expelled it and a French-led intervention followed. The war displaced about 30,000 people and left a security gap ECOWAS and the African Union have struggled to fill. The killing of Defence Minister Sadio Camara by the JNIM-linked Azawad Liberation Front revives the 2012 MNLA-AQIM pact.
