George Orwell released Animal Farm on 17 August 1945, a satire of the 1917 Russian Revolution and Stalin’s regime that faced wartime publishing bans before becoming a Cold-War bestseller. The CIA later funded a 1954 animated film and, between 1952 and 1957, dropped millions of balloons over Eastern Europe. In 2026 Andy Serkis’s adaptation starring Gaten Matarazzo and Glenn Close revives the novella’s anti-authoritarian message.
