Former NIAID Adviser David Morens Indicted Over Concealed COVID-19 Records

A grand jury in Greenbelt, Maryland, unsealed an indictment on April 28, 2026 charging David Morens, former senior adviser to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), with conspiracy, destruction, alteration, falsification and concealment. Prosecutors say he used a personal Gmail account to hide COVID-19 grant communications from April 2020 through December 2022, evading FOIA requests.

In 2020 NIAID funded a grant, “Understanding the Risk of Bat Coronavirus Emergence,” which sub-awarded money to the Wuhan Institute of Virology. NIH later terminated the grant amid concerns it could support a laboratory-origin hypothesis for SARS-CoV-2. The grant involved NIAID adviser David Morens, NIAID director Dr. Anthony Fauci, EcoHealth Alliance president Peter Daszak and Boston University virologist Gerald Keusch.
