Historical Context

During the July 2006 Lebanon War, the Israel Defense Forces collapsed a Hezbollah tunnel system beneath Bint Jbeil, using more than 1,000 tons of explosives. That pre-emptive demolition set a long-standing Israeli policy of destroying cross-border tunnels to curb Hezbollah’s rocket attacks, a tactic echoed in the 2026 Qantara tunnel demolition by the IDF.
