Historical Context

In October 1973 OAPEC, led by Saudi King Faisal, cut production and imposed an oil embargo on the United States for supporting Israel. The embargo drove world oil prices from $3 to about $12 per barrel, a 300% rise, and spurred the U.S. to create the International Energy Agency and petroleum reserves. Those stockpiles are now being tapped as Washington backs Israel’s strike on Iran.
