Dual Panoramas Capture Opposite Geological Eras

NASA’s Curiosity and Perseverance rovers each produced a 360-degree panorama that frames a distinct chapter of Mars’ ancient past. Curiosity’s view, stitched from 1,031 images between 9 Nov and 7 Dec 2025, surveys low ridges called boxwork formations in Gale Crater’s foothills of Mount Sharp. Perseverance’s view, assembled from 980 images taken 18 Dec 2025 through 25 Jan 2026, frames the rim of Jezero Crater at the site nicknamed “Lac de Charmes.” The panoramas are 2,345 miles (3,775 km) apart and together illustrate a “time-travel” from the earliest crust to later sedimentary layers. The distance is comparable to that between Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.

Mission Background and Geographic Focus

Curiosity landed in Gale Crater in 2012 and has been climbing Mount Sharp since 2014, ascending from the oldest low-lying layers through lake-deposited sediments. Perseverance arrived in Jezero Crater in 2021 to study a former lakebed and nearby ancient rocks, including Crocodile Bridge, Cheyava Falls, and the upcoming “Singing Canyon.” Both rovers are operated by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which is managed for NASA by Caltech.

By juxtaposing Jezero’s ancient rim with Mount Sharp’s younger strata, the panoramas create a spatial narrative of planetary evolution, atmospheric loss, and habitability potential. These findings relate to the early atmosphere and carbon cycle on Mars.
