Historical Context

In August 2006 the UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 1701, ending the Lebanon war with a cease-fire that began on 14 August and deployed about 15,000 UNIFIL troops to police the area south of the Litani River. Since then Hezbollah has kept tens of thousands of rockets and Israel has repeatedly breached the airspace, a pattern reflected in today’s strikes north of the Litani.
