Center coverage also reported the Azawad Liberation Front’s announcement that Kidal was free following the Russian Africa Corps’ withdrawal, an angle absent from Right coverage.

History

Historical Context

In January 2012 the MNLA launched an armed campaign to seize northern Mali, quickly capturing towns such as Kidal and declaring the independent state of Azawad on 6 April 2012. A split with Islamist groups led to fighting in June 2012, prompting a French military intervention that halted the advance and displaced about 30,000 people.
