History

Historical Context

After 5,000 Tuareg fighters returned from Libya’s 2011 civil war, the MNLA launched an insurgency on 17 January 2012, seizing Kidal and, after the March coup that ousted President Touré, capturing Gao and Timbuktu. Islamist groups such as Ansar Dine soon joined, and on 6 April 2012 the MNLA proclaimed Azawad’s independence, sparking the wider Mali war.
