An Israeli strike killed a Lebanese army soldier and his brother riding toward the soldier’s home in Bint Jbeil.

History

Historical Context

In July 2006 Hezbollah’s cross-border raid killed three Israeli soldiers and sparked a 34-day war that ended with the UN-brokered ceasefire of 14 August under Resolution 1701. The resolution created a UNIFIL monitoring mission that has since overseen intermittent border skirmishes. Today President Donald Trump, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and UN envoy Ahmad Arafa cite the 2006 precedent while urging renewed diplomatic pressure on Israel and Hezbollah.
