After Heike Kamerlingh Onnes discovered superconductivity in 1911, progress moved from low-field niobium magnets (Yntema 1955) to the 35 K cuprate breakthrough by Bednorz and Müller in 1986. DOE’s $30 million investment built Stanford’s >60-tesla pulsed magnets in the 1990s, enabling today’s IST-Austria team (Modic, Zambra) to revive superconductivity in UTe2 between 40 and 70 tesla.
