Historical Context

In 2014 Wagner Group first sent mercenaries to eastern Ukraine, establishing a model of covert Russian-backed forces. By May 2018 the outfit operated about 1,400 contractors in the Central African Republic, showing its rapid African expansion. The June 2024 strike on Kidal that killed Mali’s defence minister echoes that early pattern of Wagner-backed troops provoking rebel retaliation and drawing foreign calls for withdrawal.
