Historical Context

On May 8 1915, filly Regret, bred by Harry Payne Whitney and trained by James G. Rowe Sr., won the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, becoming the first undefeated horse to capture the race after only three career starts. Her victory broke gender barriers; Matt Winn said the win made the Derby an American institution, and she entered the Hall of Fame in 1957, one of three Derby-winning fillies (1980, 1988).
