Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said he will ask parliament to let Lithuania join U.S. freedom-of-navigation mission in Strait of Hormuz.
The proposal will be presented to Lithuania’s State Defence Council in the coming days.

Historical Context

In July 1987 the United States began Operation Earnest Will, re-flagging Kuwaiti tankers and escorting them through the Strait of Hormuz during the Iran–Iraq war. Backed by French and British navies, over 30 U.S. warships protected the convoy until it ended on 26 September 1988. The 1988 effort shows coordinated naval deployments can keep the waterway open, a concern echoed by today’s UN alerts.
