The team narrowed functional differences to roughly 20,000 genomic regions that shape the bluebuck’s appearance. Using gene-editing, roan cells are edited, reprogrammed into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), and used to generate embryos. A gestation of about 278 days in a roan surrogate will produce the first calves, which will be raised in secure enclosures. Colossal frames the effort as a step toward broader antelope conservation, noting that iPSC technology allows testing edits without live-animal experiments and could help increase genetic diversity in threatened antelope populations.
