Historical Context

The July 12 2006 Hezbollah raid on Israeli soldiers sparked a 34-day war in which Israel launched air and ground attacks, firing roughly 4,000 rockets and displacing about one million Lebanese civilians before UN Security Council Resolution 1701 halted hostilities on 11 August 2006. Today’s April 8 strikes in southern Lebanon echo that pattern, reviving UNIFIL’s challenge to enforce the cease-fire and protect civilians.
