Historical Context

In July 2006 Hezbollah ambushed Israeli soldiers, sparking a 34-day war that ended with UN Security Council Resolution 1701 on 11 August 2006 and a fragile cease-fire. That cease-fire limited Israeli incursions and left about 1,200 Lebanese civilians dead. Today’s U.S.–mediated truce, extended by President Donald Trump and denounced by Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, follows the same incomplete peace framework.
