Historical Context

After the Hong Kong–Shenzhen Western Corridor opened on 1 July 2007, inaugurated by President Hu Jintao and Chief Executive Donald Tsang, the Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong Express Rail Link began construction in 2011 and launched commercial service on 23 September 2018. MTR Corporation now adds 26 high-speed train pairs, serving about 88,800 daily passengers (2024) and easing peak travel.
