Orioles Promote Top Prospect Trey Gibson for MLB Debut vs. Yankees

Baltimore’s No. 3 prospect, 23-year-old right-hander Trey Gibson, will be brought up on Sunday to start against the New York Yankees, marking his major-league debut. The Orioles will select Gibson’s contract from Triple-A Norfolk, creating an active-roster spot while keeping him on the 40-man roster.

Gibson was bypassed in the 2023 amateur draft after attending Liberty University, where he was suspended for his junior season. He signed a minor-league contract with a $150,000 bonus and progressed through Class A Delmarva, High-A Aberdeen, Double-A Chesapeake (June 3) and Triple-A Norfolk (Aug. 12). Across the three levels he logged 120  1/3 innings, striking out 166 batters and issuing 44 walks. At Norfolk he posted a 2-2 record with a 4.01 ERA in six starts, striking out 25 and walking 12 in 24  2/3 innings. In spring training he recorded a 4.66 ERA over 9 2/3 innings in three appearances.

Gibson averaged 93.6 mph on his four-seam fastball and 93 mph on his sinker at Norfolk. He employed six pitches: sinkers (29.5 %), four-seamers (18.3 %), cutters (18.3 %), curveballs (18.1 %), sliders (11 %) and sweepers (4.8 %). The 6-foot-5 pitcher’s repertoire is designed to complement his strikeout ability.

Orioles manager Craig Albernaz emphasized that the debut should be “a fun day” for Gibson and urged him to trust his stuff. Albernaz also noted that a starter cannot rely solely on a fastball at any level, underscoring the importance of Gibson’s diverse pitch mix.

Before Saturday’s game the Orioles activated left-hander Dietrich Enns from the 15-day injured list after he recovered from an infected left foot. The club recalled left-hander Nick Raquet from Triple-A Norfolk, optioned right-hander Tyler Wells to the Tides, and designated right-hander Albert Suárez for assignment.
