Historical Context

On 18 April 1988 the United States carried out Operation Praying Mantis, a naval retaliation after Iran mined the Gulf and damaged USS Samuel B. Roberts. Aircraft from carrier USS Enterprise and surface warships sank Iranian frigate Sahand and hit platforms, reducing Iranian attacks. The action, within Operation Earnest Will, helped push Iran toward a July cease-fire, informing today’s Project Freedom in the Strait of Hormuz.
