‘The White Lotus’ Season 4 Sets Cannes as Its Stage

Mike White’s anthology series ‘The White Lotus’ will devote its fourth season to the Cannes Film Festival. Production, budgeted at $120 million, will run for seven months, with 50 days of shooting in Cannes and additional work in Saint-Tropez and Paris. Interiors will be filmed at the Château de la Messardière (rebranded “White Lotus du Cap”), the Hôtel Martinez (“White Lotus Cannes”) and the Hôtel Lutetia.

Previous seasons have used Hawaii, Sicily and Thailand as resort backdrops. Producer David Bernad said locating the show at Cannes introduced a “fame” element and unlocked the series’ cultural-clash dynamics. Cannes, unlike prior locations, serves as the festival’s “beating heart,” providing a built-in commentary on celebrity and competition.

The ensemble includes French actor Vincent Cassel as hotel manager, Nadia Tereszkiewicz, Laura Smet, Sandra Bernhard, Steve Coogan, Kumail Nanjiani and Rosie Perez. Helena Bonham Carter left after a week due to “creative differences” and was replaced by Oscar-winner Laura Dern, whose prior collaborations with White on ‘Enlightened’ and ‘Year of the Dog’ informed a new role.

The $120 million budget supports an estimated 17,000 hotel-night bookings for the region. The Château de la Messardière’s 32-acre gardens were sealed off, and the venue’s entrance guarded discreetly. Open casting calls attracted large local crowds, while the production’s presence is projected to boost tourism revenue despite a planned withdrawal from the Riviera during the summer peak.

Producer David Bernad described Cannes as the “beating heart” and “the biggest dream on Earth” for the series. Deputy mayor Sophie Mouysset said the 40- to 50-day shoot “brings the city to life.” Canneseries artistic director Albin Lewi noted a “very tailored setup” and streamlined logistics for the crew.

Hotel Martinez staff said they were unaware of the production, and some residents asked “What’s ‘White Lotus’?” or “Who’s Mike White?” The sealed gardens and discreet security raised modest unease about public access during the tourist season.

After Cannes, the crew will film at the Hôtel Lutetia in Paris in June before returning to the Riviera for final scenes. Cast members are slated to walk the Cannes red carpet during the second week of shooting.
