Guyana Defends Essequibo
- The International Court of Justice heard Guyana and Venezuela argue over the Essequibo region.
- Guyana said Spain and Venezuela never administered the 160,000-sq-km area, noting Dutch settlement in 1598 and Fort Kykoveral in 1616.
- Guyana taxes, administers and elects nine parliamentary members for Essequibo, whose 2022 census counted 313,175 people.
- The court will rule after May 11, with a decision expected later in 2026, after Venezuela offered no new arguments.
