Historical Context

In July 1987 the United States launched Operation Earnest Will, re-flagging Kuwaiti tankers and escorting them through the Persian Gulf amid the Iran-Iraq Tanker War, a response to UN Resolution 598. At its height the mission deployed over 30 warships, ending in September 1988. Trump’s 2024 Project Freedom repeats this escort model, sending U.S. warships to protect two flagged ships.
