Historical Context

AltaVista, launched by DEC on December 15 1995, pioneered fast crawling and indexing and powered Yahoo’s search in 1996. By 2000 AltaVista still served 17.7% of users versus Google’s 7%, yet Google later overtook it. Yahoo bought AltaVista’s parent Overture for $140 million in 2003 and retired the brand in 2013. IAC’s Ask.com, acquired in 2005, ended service on May 1 2026.
