In May 1977 George Lucas released Star Wars, a surprise blockbuster that earned $775 million worldwide and sparked the modern summer-blockbuster model. After Lucas sold Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012, the franchise expanded with prequel and sequel trilogies and the Disney-produced series The Mandalorian. The upcoming May 2026 Mandalorian and Grogu film continues that pattern, reuniting Disney, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and composer Ludwig Göransson.
