Historical Context

On 9 May 1950 French foreign minister Robert Schuman proposed placing coal and steel of France, West Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg under a common High Authority. The six states signed the Treaty of Paris on 18 April 1951, creating the European Coal and Steel Community, which lasted 50 years until 2002.
