History

Historical Context

On 18 April 1988 the United States carried out Operation Praying Mantis, destroying two Iranian oil platforms, a frigate, a fast-attack craft and several speedboats in retaliation for the mining of USS Samuel B. Roberts on 14 April. The strike helped push Iran toward a July cease-fire in the Iran-Iraq War. Today Bahrain detains 41 alleged Revolutionary Guard members and the UAE intercepts Iranian missiles over the Strait of Hormuz, recalling the 1988 clash.
