Hideo Nakata’s 1998 film adaptation became a box-office hit in Japan, outshining the simultaneous sequel Spiral and launching the global J-horror wave. The success prompted Hollywood studios such as DreamWorks to remake the story, beginning with the 2002 English-language Ring.
