Historical Context

Prompted by Pan Am’s 1966 request, Boeing unveiled the 747 in September 1968 and flew it on February 9 1969. The 747-400 entered service in 1989, with 694 built, and after production ended in 2023 the model entered museums. Today the California Science Center, with Korean Air chairman Walter Cho, is installing a rescued 747-400 fuselage to inspire engineers.
