The Outsider: A Brazilian Biopic Illuminates Claudia Andujar’s Fight for the Yanomami

Maria Farinha Filmes announced “The Outsider” (“A Estrangeira”), a biopic of photographer Claudia Andujar starring Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, with Wagner Moura as executive producer and supporting actor. Sandra Delgado writes and directs; production begins in 2026.

Swiss-born Holocaust survivor Claudia Andujar settled in Brazil and photographed the Yanomami. In the mid-1970s the military built a highway through their land; her images became protest, aiding land-demarcation and Amazon vaccination. Her work now resides in MoMA, the Tate and Inhotim.

Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Oscar-nominated for “Sentimental Value,” was selected for her ability to convey Andujar’s European roots and Brazilian ties. Wagner Moura, Oscar-nominated for “The Secret Agent,” joins as executive producer and actor. Sandra Delgado, director of Disney’s “Maria: The Outlaw Legend,” leads the film.

The studio’s Globoplay thriller “Aruanas” attracted 35 million viewers per episode, and Netflix’s “The Beginning of Life” was Brazil’s most-watched documentary in 2016. In 2024 MFF & Co, its Los Angeles arm, acquired a stake in London’s Violet Films and launched projects like “Possible” and “Esperanza.”

The film presents Andujar’s archive as a catalyst for Indigenous land rights and public-health advocacy. By dramatizing the 1970s highway conflict, it revives dialogue on Brazil’s authoritarian past and the Yanomami’s ongoing struggle, showing art’s political power.
