Historical Context

After the United States placed Jupiter missiles in Turkey and Italy (1959-1961) and survived the failed Bay of Pigs, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev agreed with Fidel Castro in July 1962 to install 42 R-12 missiles in Cuba. When U-2 photos revealed the sites in October 1962, President John F. Kennedy imposed a naval quarantine, which ended on 20 November after a secret missile-swap deal.
