History

Historical Context

In June 1981 Israel’s air force, on orders from Prime Minister Menachem Begin, bombed Iraq’s French-built Osirak reactor, killing ten Iraqi soldiers and a French technician. The strike, condemned by U.S. President Ronald Reagan and rebuked by the UN Security Council, created the “Begin Doctrine” that justifies later pre-emptive raids such as the 2007 Operation Orchard.
