Unemployment Rises
- Unemployment rose to 5% in March, up from 4.9%, as vacancies fell to 705,000, the lowest level since April 2021.
- Payroll jobs dropped 100,000 in April, leaving employment at 30.2 million, the biggest monthly fall since May 2020.
- Youth unemployment rose to 16.2% for 16- to 24-year-olds to March, the highest since 2015, prompting Deutsche Bank economist Sanjay Raja to say labour market could keep Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee from raising rates.
