Texas Attorney General Runoff Upset Hinges on $2.75 Million Single-Donor Gift

In the May 26 Republican runoff for Texas attorney general, U.S. Rep. Chip Roy faces state Sen. Mayes Middleton. Early voting began in mid-May after a March primary left no candidate with a majority. The contest has become a financial showdown following a $2.75 million contribution from Amarillo businessman Alex Fairly to Roy’s campaign.

Mayes Middleton, a Galveston-based oil-and-gas heir, has self-funded more than $15 million, outspending Roy in the March primary.
